Stretch marks are tears in the layers of skin beneath the surface. They are a common occurrence in both men and women. While it is not fully understood as to how they are formed, stretch mark treatment is relatively easy with many available options.
Stretch mark treatment can be broadly divided into two categories – external and internal. Most of the treatments are external in nature but one must also adopt internal treatments for a more complete solution. Although it is likely that each course of treatment will differ from one person to the next, here are some suggestions on how to tackle stretch marks.
Two easily available external stretch mark treatments are laser and surgical treatments. Vascular laser treatments are effective on early stretch marks. For older stretch marks, fractional laser treatment is the recommended external treatment. The surgical option is an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck which simply cuts them out. Other external treatments include the use of moisturizers, the application of a retinoic acid cream, glycolic acid or a combination of both. Application of Vitamin E oil is also known to work.
Internal stretch mark treatment focuses on nutrition which is also beneficial to all round good health. You should look into taking supplements such as vitamins C, E, selenium, and alpha lipoic acid. Your diet should include adequate fluids, monounsaturated fats and gamma lineolic acid. You should consult your doctor before you begin a course of supplements.
The topical creams and solutions that are widely available online as well as in the market are not very effective. In fact, they can have quite adverse effects. Lasers are more effective for stretch mark treatment. While they may not be able to remove the mature ones, they can make them a lot lighter and less visible. This is done by collagen stimulation in the skin.
It is generally advisable not to expose the treated area to direct sunlight for a few days after the treatment. Some types of treatment also leave the skin bruised for a couple of days. The stretch mark treatment that will be effective differs from person to person depending upon the skin tone and type. So consult your dermatologist before going for one.
Stretch marks are not a health hazard but can be extremely embarrassing. Fear not, stretch mark treatment is the answer and as discussed there are many options available. The best way forward is to tackle the external signs and ensure that your skin is properly looked after with proper nutrition.
