As tragic as it sounds, we will all hit our own definition of rock bottom at some point in life. Hell, you could even hit it multiple times – life is constantly full of ups and downs. When you’re at the top, cruising through your highest point, you feel as though everything is perfectly in place. You’re happy, life is good, and you have a reason to smile every day.
When you’re at your lowest point, it’s hard to pick yourself back up. In fact, it’s really easy to keep yourself bogged down by negative thoughts, trapping you in your place.
What should you do when you’re at this point?
Put things into perspective
A low point doesn’t automatically mean that you will be at your lowest forever. Put things into perspective and understand that, hey, things are really bad right now, but they won’t be like this all the time. You are going to get through this and see the good times up ahead.
It’s normal to feel incredibly low, but it’s also normal to feel incredibly high. You just have to recognize that you’re going through a rough patch – but that’s all it is: a patch. It’s not something that will define the rest of your life; you can get through this, but the only way is up.
Gain some inspiration
It’s difficult to put things into perspective when you feel really low, I appreciate that. So, why don’t you look around for some inspiration from individuals that have been in your position before? A quick Google will show you countless success stories of business owners who were at the very bottom, in loads of debt, yet climbed their way out of the slump to the highest point in their life.
Business success stories aren’t the only ones to look at. You can find films and series based on true events that will really inspire you. One recommendation is to watch Tulsa the movie as it looks at a man who hits rock bottom but finds a way back through his estranged daughter. It’s really uplifting and shows you how your life can turn around!
Take small steps
Understand that you won’t get out of your slump unless you take action. You should start making a plan and taking small actionable steps that help you feel better. If your career is causing you to be at rock bottom, think about what you can do to address this. Start by improving your resume, gaining more qualifications, and putting yourself in a better position to find work.
If it’s a relationship issue, start taking small steps to get happiness back in your life. Be more social – organize to go out with your friends, etc. Small steps help you get ahold of your life and slowly claw yourself from the pit of despair.
Being at your lowest point is never fun or easy. Hopefully, these tips give you some ideas about how you can come back from this situation. Make no mistake about it, you WILL come back.
