Lounging Around: How To Design The Perfect Living Room For Your Home

The living room, or lounge, is the heart of your home. It is the space you go to relax after a stressful day or to escape reality in by watching your favorite movies. It’s also a social hub, whether you’re entertaining guests or spending quality time with your family. As a result, it’s hardly surprising that it is the room we decorate the most. In fact, the average homeowner will decorate their living room every 25 months.

However, it can be hard to know exactly where to start when carrying out a renovation project, especially if you don’t want to rush into a decision you’ll later regret (spoiler alert: lime green walls are never a good idea).

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to design the perfect living room to lounge around in!

  • Think about the kind of atmosphere you want to create. The first step to redesigning any space within your home is to think seriously about how you want the space to feel. For example, if you’ve got young children, you’ll want the space to feel warm, welcoming, and friendly instead of looking like a showhome. Once you’ve thought about this, you can begin to consider other design options, such as themes.
  • Make the most of the space you have available to us. Many homeowners feel their homes are too small, but this doesn’t mean you have to start shopping for a new home (or mansion). In fact, there are various ways in which you can ‘trick’ your eyes into believing your living room is much bigger than it actually is. For example, Ceiling Mounted Curtain Rods mean you don’t have to find the space for rackets along your walls. This also means that you can have floor to ceiling curtains installed, which naturally makes the room feel bigger than it is.
  • Choose the color scheme wisely. A well-designed room should have a color scheme, but you must think carefully about your chosen colors. For example, white walls reflect light, making your room look bigger, but you are also asking for trouble if you have toddlers who will leave fingerprints everywhere. The colors you feature in your home can also affect your mood. For example, pastel shades can make you feel less stressed and anxious.
  • Choose a statement piece of furniture. Another way you can create an impactful living room is by choosing a statement piece of furniture to feature in the space. Having multiple ‘statement’ pieces will only make the space look cluttered and chaotic while having one or two will be pleasant to the eye. For example, you could purchase a  leather sofa or hang exciting artwork.
  • Focus on comfort. If you’re looking to enhance your home’s warmth and coziness, then you should also try to find as many ways as possible to make the space comfortable. For example, rugs are a great (and cheap) way to achieve this goal. Alternatively, you can try to make the space as personal as possible by hanging photographs, as this is a great way to make your house feel like home.
  • Feature plants in your home. Not only do plants look great within your home, but they can also bring around a range of health benefits for your family. For example, studies suggest that plants can improve indoor air quality and can help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Caring for a plant can also help you teach your child to be more responsible.
  • Get creative with storage. Regardless of how house proud you may be, the accumulation of clutter will always negatively impact how your home looks. What’s worse, it could also have a negative impact on your mental health. Therefore, you strive to keep clutter to the minimum within your living room by getting creative with storage. For example, you could install shelving units or look for storage boxes that can be placed underneath furniture. This will not detract from your living room looks but means you no longer have to leave things on the counter.
  • Create ambiance through lighting. The right lighting can make or break the atmosphere within any room in your home. Thankfully, this also allows you to get creative. For example, if you want to create a slightly mysterious or romantic atmosphere, you can achieve this through fairy lights and scented candles. Alternatively, you could focus on letting in as much natural light as possible to create a space where you feel lively, bright, and alert.
