As parents, we all want to do our best for our children to give them the best chance in life, but we can’t exactly do their homework for them, Well, we could but that would be cheating, and more importantly, but would not help them learn about important things like the benefits of hard work and how to manage their time.

What we can do, however, is to help them to do their homework regularly and effectively. Here are some tips to help with that:

1. Talk about it

Taking an interest in your child’s homework and talking to them about what they have to do and what they will learn for it is a very simple way of getting them to be more enthusiastic about it if they aren’t already.

2. Praise their effort

Praising your child for sitting down and working on their homework, no matter how well they do it or not, is a great way to get them doing it without a struggle too. You may want to offer rewards, but they should be small and given only after completing X days of homework instead of after every session if you want to avoid having to bribe your child to work forever.

3. Use peer pressure

Peer pressure is always looked upon as being a bad thing, but sometimes it can be a force for good too For example, if you enroll your child in one of the local after school programs that run a homework club if all of the kids around them are doing their homework, they will more than likely join in too, This could be a good way to get those persistent homework refusers to get stuck in.

4. Maintain a routine

Whether you want your child to do their homework right after school or once dinner is over, it’s best to maintain a strict homework time routine if you can. Doing so will mean your child knows what to expect, so there will be fewer tantrums or requests to play on their Xbox or whatever.

5. Do it together

Okay, so you definitely do not want to actually do the homework for them because your child needs to learn for themself, but there is nothing wrong with sitting down with them and helping them look things up or maybe throwing the occasional hint. If they see you enjoying the process, they are much more likely to think that homework can be good fun and it’s a great way to spend time together too.

6. Take it out of the house

From library visits to museum trips, anything you can do to make learning away from school fun is really going to help your kids to get stuck in and enjoy learning at home as well as in the schoolroom.

As you can see, there are lots of simple strategies you can use to get your kids doing their homework, while also ensuring that they do their best every time. Use whichever ones are useful to you and leave the rest. Good luck.
