Roof repairs
Roof repairs are dangerous because of the simple reason that you may fall off when attempting them. This means that even relatively simple tasks like replacing a few roof tiles can be risky. It can be exhausting work and involves carrying tools up and down ladders, which can make you tired and prone to mistakes
Although you might find yourself able to complete maintenance like clearing out gutters, even this should never be attempted alone. Always have someone else with you to secure the ladder when in use.
Plumbing
Small plumbing tasks can certainly be completed by yourself, but know when to call in the pros. If you have a leaky pipe perhaps it just needs tightening or a new washer before it’s as good as new. All you need for DIY plumbing success is a bit of knowledge and a couple of basic tools.
On the other hand, plumbing that goes wrong can be very bad news indeed. Leaks can cause damp, mold and serious water damage to your home that could take a lot of time and money to repair. If your plumbing repairs are beyond your capabilities, don’t even attempt them.
Electrics
Any home maintenance that relates to electrics carries with it an inherent risk. Even if you turn off your electricity supply at the fuse box – which is an absolutely essential step in all situations – issues could arise. For example, any mistakes with the wiring could cause a fire at a later date.
The risks are also apparent when tackling jobs that involve your home electrics indirectly. If you attempt to repair a water damaged ceiling, for example, this may involve both water and your home’s electrical wiring – a potentially deadly combination which is best handled by a professional repair team.
On the other hand, there are likely to be small electrical jobs that you can tackle yourself such as changing a light switch.
Gas appliances
If you have gas appliances, like an oven, then be extra careful when moving or replacing them. Even if you are just shifting an appliance temporarily to carry out cleaning or redecorating make sure you do not disconnect anything accidentally. A gas leak could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which will have a harmful effect on your health.
For most minor repairs it will probably be fine to tackle them yourself. This will save you money and give you a great sense of personal satisfaction. If you have any safety concerns, however, then let the professional do what they do best.
