All you have to do is Google ‘money saving hacks’ and thousands of articles come up about the best ways to reduce your spending. However, just because these articles say that they have hacks for cutting costs, it doesn’t mean that they actually work or are doable, especially when you’ve got a family to look after.
Yes, turning off the heating may keep energy costs lower, but what are you and your little ones meant to do, walk around wrapped in blankets? Reducing the amount of times you use your washing machine each week may work in theory, but when you’ve got kids who are constantly getting mucky, it’s not really a viable option. Living off of value noodles or pasta may work well, but kids get bored of eating the same foods, and so, it won’t give you long-term results.
To make it easier for you to cut costs, below are some hacks that actually work and are worth trying.
Bulk buy and batch cook
The key to saving money on the cost of food is surprisingly simple – bulk buying. Often, if you join a warehouse club like Costco, for instance, you can bulk buy certain foods and save money on them. To ensure that nothing that you bulk buy goes to waste, make the time to batch cook. Batch cooking with bulk bought ingredients will not only save you money, but it will also make ensuring that the family gets a healthy, wholesome meal every night, easier. As all you’ll need to do is reheat something that you’ve already prepared.
Collect coupons
If you don’t already clip coupons, now is the time to start. We’ve all seen those TV shows that explain how you can make incredible savings by couponing, so it’s easy to see the value to clipping coupons from magazines and newspapers, as well as printing out any ones that you find online. Obviously, you don’t just want to clip any old coupons; you want ones that you will actually use. Say, for example, you shop at Walmart and need Walmart coupons, Google ‘coupons for Walmart’ and see whether any come up. It’s so simple and so effective, and best of all, by using coupons you can make some incredible savings.
Save water
Saving energy is something that we’re constantly told to do if we want to reduce our spending but saving water is easier and a more effective way to cut costs, or at least, it can be. To reduce the amount of water (and energy) that you’re using, wash your clothes on a quick cycle – this simple change can cut your water usage by a quarter. Another way to reduce your water consumption is to become a shower only household and save baths for special occasions, such as before a special event or when someone’s not feeling well. Showers use less than a quarter of the water that baths use, and a lot less energy too as less water needs to be heated.
