Spring is, well springing, and although the weather is still pretty cold you can be absolutely sure of one thing. Below the surface new life is getting ready to burst through and fill our worlds with color. It also means you probably haven’t paid much attention to your garden. So we’ve got some great tips on getting your garden back into action.
February is a perfect time to get on with the outdoor tidy up. We can all be a little guilty of neglect from late September onward but that tends to lend itself to a pretty chaotic mess if you don’t jump on it the moment plants, and weeds, start to push through. So get outside now.
The first place to start, is you haven’t already, is complete clearance. Strip it all back to basics. It’s not too late to prune it up a bit and will result in a healthier growth. Do a little every day instead of cramming it all in on the weekend.
Scout your beds for hints of any weeds. Now is a great time to dig things up. The ground will be wet so root systems are easier to remove. In the summer your ground is much harder so you tend to just snap the weed off instead of getting to the crux of the matter.
Once you are sure all your beds are clear you might start thinking about compost. Composting at home is a really great solution to saving you cash and it’s very simple. It will also reduce the amount of waste your household produces so is a great way of increasing your personal Eco and sustainability output.
This is also a good time of year to secure your garden. If you have pets or young children it will help keep them safe. Chain link fence is a really economical way of ensuring people can’t get in and your animals can’t get out. You can make it more attractive by adding climbing plants to it. Or use it to help guide your runner beans. Have a look at some other tips for keeping your family safe in this article.
If you have a lawn then this is almost like the show piece of your garden. A well kept lawn can really boost the style appeal of your outside space. If you have children or pets then your lawn will take a real battering. Use this time to roll it if you can or to stamp down any lumps. Give it a really good feed and re seed so that it’s got everything it needs to be in optimum condition at the beginning of the year
Finally, if you want to add some real impact to your space, consider an eco wall. Living walls are a fantastic addition to any garden and really great for the environment. You could consider making this from herbs such as rosemary. It will smell great too!
Getting prepared now will give you more time to really enjoy your space outdoors when the weather finally breaks. So sit back, relax and watch the neighbors contend with their jungles!
