Just about everyone agrees that a great sandwich is somewhat of a culinary masterpiece. It combines food groups into a stacked delight for the taste buds. So which cities are the best for sandwiches? Here are a few that put their own unique spin on the sandwich to make them the best spots in the country.
Carl’s Deli – Clayton, Missouri
Carl’s is one of those places that’s lovable solely because of its stripped-down appearance. The deli doesn’t take much time setting up interior decor or enticing people with big signs and advertisements. Instead, it offers the best sandwiches in the city, including a monster pastrami sandwich, roast beef, and even an egg salad sandwich for the vegetarian. It’s actually located just outside Saint Louis, in the wealthy suburb of Clayton, one of the best places to live for young professionals.
Mudgie’s Deli – Detroit, Michigan
Mudgie’s is widely regarded as one of the best sandwich shops in the country thanks to their signature Mudgie sandwich, which contains beef brisket, turkey breast, a housemade cream cheese spread, and vegetables, all on an onion roll. The restaurant also has spins on traditional favorites such as the croque-madame (think fancy ham and cheese with egg), the tuna melt, and the reuben. They also have several of their own creations, each as delicious as the next. You can also wash it down with one of Mudgie’s 100+ craft beers.
John’s Roast Pork – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
No trip to Philadelphia is complete without trying one of its signature Philly cheesesteaks. The hardest part is deciding where to go, as nearly every sandwich shop in the city maintains that they have the best cheesesteak to be found. Although John’s Roast Pork didn’t invent the Philly, the restaurant, opened in 1930, is a city favorite. What sets them apart is the sesame seed encrusted bread they use that adds a wonderful texture to the sandwich and propels them to the top spot. They also have a famous roast pork sandwich, which if you’re in the mood for something different, won’t disappoint.
Central Grocery – New Orleans, Louisiana
Located in the French Quarter right near Cafe du Monde, you’ll find Central Grocery, the home of the world’s largest (and best) muffuletta sandwich. If you’ve never had it, it’s a culinary delight consisting of salami, mortadella (Italian pork), ham, provolone cheese, and the signature part – olive salad. The muffuletta continues to be the prized sandwich of New Orleans, and the one at Central Grocery is the best, being featured on several cooking shows and television programs.
Snarf’s – Boulder, Colorado
Perhaps the best thing about Snarf’s, outside of their sandwiches, is the fact that this restaurant may come to a town near you as the sandwich shop expands into other markets. If you get to one, try the portobello and provolone or pastrami and swiss, both amazingly delicious.
Everyone has a favorite sandwich shop depending on where he or she lives. However, a good sandwich is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Venture out and try something different. You’ll like what you find.
