What to look for in a pair of hiking shoes or boots
Despite the fact that hiking is an incredibly enjoyable and often a rewarding pursuit, it can help you stay in great physical shape too. But in order to realise its health benefits, you need to have a good pair of hiking shoes or boots, otherwise you’ll be doing your body more harm than good.
What’s more, your image and ego might suffer too, as some options aren’t that attractive. Therefore, here is what to look for in a pair of hiking shoes or boots.
Type of footwear
From lightweight hiking shoes to mountaineering boots, there are various types of footwear available. But you should choose a style that suits your favored activity.
If you prefer casual strolls, a flexible low-cut shoe will suffice. But weightier boots with stiff midsoles are required for more intrepid pursuits. Make an informed decision by taking into account expected terrain, weather conditions, hiking duration and backpack load.
Level of skill
If you’re a beginner or hiking novice, you should err on the side of caution and choose a shoe that provides sufficient support. Over time, your feet, ankles, calves and thighs should get stronger and your reliance on sturdy boots will lessen.
But if you’re fairly experienced or want to get better, make sure your choice of footwear will meet future demands but remain fit for purpose. Don’t attempt more adventurous hikes with substandard footwear, as this can be extremely dangerous.
The right fit
Functionality may well be important, but fitting is arguably more crucial. Ignore your shoe size and concentrate on finding a comfortable yet supportive fit.
When trying hiking shoes or boots on, wear the same socks you intend to use and ensure your toes do not touch the front. Remember, the shape and size of your feet will be slightly different after a prolonged walk, so bear this in mind.
How to look good
Fashion conscious hikers may prefer full-grain leather to synthetic materials, as they tend to be better looking and more durable. Overly-technical shoes and boots aren’t that desirable either, as they usually look rather busy.
From a style perspective, it is very much down to personal preference. But remember, your priority should be buying hiking footwear that matches your skill level and chosen activity, which fit comfortably with sufficient support.
