Some parents struggle with having their children eat enough fruits, but how many know of a kid favorite fruit that is at its peak during the cold winter and early spring months? They are a thinly wrapped burst of freshness that is good for you as well. I am talking about Halo mandarins. My kids get so excited when I bring home a bag or crate of these delicious and refreshing small citrus fruits. They are easy to peel, delicious, and mostly seedless. The only problem is the constant reminder for the kids to actually throw out the rinds.
Now some people call these fruits clementine and others call them mandarin. Well they are both right, Clementine is a type of mandarin. But did you know that mandarin oranges got their names from the bright orange robes that Chinese advisors to the Public Court wore? These advisors were called, you guess it, Mandarins. They used to be only for the upper class, but now anyone can enjoy these extra sweet fruits.
They are a great afterschool snack, or actually they are a great anytime snack. My kids beg for them first thing in the morning and right after school, but they are great any time of the day. The kids don’t care, but I care that they are 100% grown in California and are GMO free. I try to monitor where my food comes from, and I would much rather purchase food grown in the USA! And they come in package sizes that fit any family, from 2ct all the way up to a 5lb box.
What is even more fun, is their website is full of craft ideas on their blog, but also a kid friendly portion that is full of games, coloring pages, and neat little videos to watch. The company isn’t just about turning a profit either, they give back to their community by donating fresh fruit to food banks in California as well as investing in education. By supporting them, you are also supporting their community outreach programs, and that really does make life a little bit sweeter.
The season for this little gems is almost over, so make sure you head out to stock up on these fruity snacks now, so you don’t have to disappoint anyone later when they come looking for a Halo Mandarin.
