It can be a huge undertaking, building a home for your family. It would be such a shame to design a build a home, only to move in and find that it’s all wrong. Look to these tips to pick the best home design for your family’s needs.
Plan for the now
Look at your family as it currently stands. If you have three teenagers, do you really want their bedrooms right next to yours? Look at the floor plans of your potential house and work out whether it fits in with what you need right now for your family, then adjust if necessary. If you have young children, it may be a good idea for them to have their own bathroom close to their rooms to make toilet training and bath time easier. If you frequently have guests coming to stay, it may be a good idea to put the guest bedroom further away from the main living domains of the house, to give visitors some privacy when they come over.
Leave room for the future
While planning for now can be practical, it’s also worthwhile looking to the future if you’re not planning on moving for the next few years. For example, if you’re a couple looking to have children in the near future, it wouldn’t be a good idea to buy a one bedroom apartment, when a two bedroom cottage with a yard might be more suitable.
Consider your location
When choosing your ideal home design, it really pays to consider your location. If you’re in a cold environment, consider where the heating will be, then plan to have the bedrooms in close proximity to it so you can save on energy bills. On the other hand, if you are by the beach, a big veranda and large windows which can easily be opened to let in the sea breezes can be a major plus to make your family’s life as comfortable as possible.
Make it easy
If you’ve got young kids, you’ll probably be spending a lot of time with them either in the laundry (kids being messy = multiple outfits per day to wash) or in the kitchen, so it makes sense to have these two rooms close to each other to make life easier. The same goes for having a yard with a fence so that the kids can play in your backyard without the need to always leave the apartment to go to the park. Design your home to make life as easy as possible – you’ll thank yourself later.
Rent a while
If you have the time, renting for a while to try out a few different property layouts can be a great way to get a practical idea of what home designs work best for your family’s needs.
Picking the best home design for your family’s needs can take a little planning, but the results are so worth it.
