Killer tips to store freshly made juice for a long time

You know that fresh juice right out of the juicer is best, but it’s not always practical. These days, many people simply do not have the time to make fresh juice every day, so people want to make a huge batch of juice at one time, and save it for use at a later time. I am often asked a question “Is it possible to store fresh juice”. The answer is yes but you should know few things such as type of storage container to be used, type of juicer to use, freezing etc.

How long can freshly made juice be stored?

Well it depends upon 4 factors.

  1. Type of juicer used to extract juice

Juicers can be divided into three broad categories.

Centrifugal juicer – A centrifugal juicer cuts up the fruit or vegetable with a cutting blade. It then spins the produce at a high speed to separate the juice from the pulp. They rotate at a very high speed. Due to high speed probability of oxidation increases, you should not store juice longer than 7 to 8 hours if made with a centrifugal juicer.

Masticating juicer- Masticating juicers basically chew the produce. They apply pressure and breaks down the fibrous cell walls of vegetables and fruits, while protecting their nutrient content. They rotate at a slow speed and prevent oxidation. Juice made by masticating juicer can be stored up to 24 hrs.

Twin gear juicer- Twin gear juicer also known as triturating juicer is basically a kind of masticating juicer but with two gears. Twin gear juicers are expensive. Twin gear juicer cost varies from $500 to $1000. They produce healthiest juice. Green Star Elite Juicer which is a twin gear juicer claims their juices can be stored for up to 72 hours. Retail price of Green Star juicer is around $500.

  1. Produce being juiced

Citrus, Melons, peaches, plums, Berries, grape juice tend to last longer, while apples tend to turn brown quickly. You should never store apple juice for long time. It should be consumed as soon as possible.

  1. Type of container being used

Juice should be stored in glass containers.  I recommend mason jars to store fresh juice.  Some people recommend plastic bottles. I do not recommend using plastic because it can contain some harmful chemicals. Also make sure you use an air-tight container. Air is one of the primary factors that will cause juice degradation. Also be sure to fill it to the brim to minimize the air that is contained inside the container with the juice.

It is a good practice to suck air from the juice bottle using a vacuum pump. Vacuum pumps will pump all air out of the juice and create a vacuum. Under vacuumed juice can’t oxidize because there is no air in there. You can easily get a small vacuum pump from Amazon.

  1. The way the juice is being stored

Juice degradation happens very fast at room temperature. Keep your juice cold by keeping it in a refrigerator.

  1. It is better to use a masticating or a twin gear juicer to make juice. Masticating and twin gear juicers use cold press technology and reduces oxidation.
  2. Use air-tight mason jars to store fresh juice. Don’t use plastic bottles.
  3. Fill bottle to the brim to minimize the air that is contained inside the container with the juice. You can also use absmall vacuum pump to suck the air out.
